Yesterday, my family and I got to spend a day at the organic farm, Florida Fields to Forks, while helping to prepare for their Fall at the Farm event. My Dad and two brothers smoked two pasture raised Berkshire pigs. Chefs from local restaurants prepared sides with vegetables from the farm's organic gardens. The weather was beautiful as we enjoyed the delicious locally grown, beyond organic food. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to support the Michael Gene Kids Foundation, which helps underprivileged children in their community.
This year they smoked two of the Farm's pasture raised Berkshire Pigs. The meat cooked slowly for 16 hours!
They spent all night at the farm cooking the meat. This was Andrew's lounge chair throughout the night.
And well...this was T.J.'s lounge chair throughout the night...bless his heart.
While the meat continued to cook throughout the day, every one in the family helped prepare for the big event...
Joey and Andrew organized glasses and tore raffle tickets while watching the Florida game. Go Gators!
My sister helped out with the pork and my Mom...well you can see what my Mom's job was. Something tells me she didn't mind one bit.
Oh, and MY job was taste testing but that came a little later on.
Ahhh! Look at this goodness!
Juicy, tender, farm raised, Strazi cooked, Berkshire pork.
Now it was time to start pulling the meat.
Meanwhile, I started my job as the taste tester and oh was it lip smackin', finger lickin', make you wanna slap your momma kind of good!
I also took the time to tour the farm and boy was it beautiful!
I even met some friends along the way.
When I returned they were STILL pulling meat. They pulled meat for THREE hours!
Check out my brother's tongue sticking out. That means serious business!
Now it was time to eat and have some cake! Check out this cake!
Ava and I wore matching "Whatcha Smokin'?" shirts to support the cooks.
Ava was wore out from having such a blast on the farm. She sure was happy to be in her crib so she could start dreaming about farm animals.
The day was filled with lots of laughter, love, family, and good food! Thank you to Jan and Brock, owners of Florida Fields to Forks for letting us be a part of this special event. Go check out Florida Fields to Forks Farm by clicking here.
Join me in my journey as a wife, new mom and a baker as I learn to balance all of life's aprons.
