About two months ago I decided to cut caffeine out of my diet. The reason for this was my struggle with anxiety. I noticed that caffeine made my heart race often and caused an increase in my anxiety.
The first week or so without caffeine was tough. I had bad headaches and was super tired! I often drank my caffeine around 2:00pm to get me through the rest of the day and late into the night. Without this caffeine I was so tired in the afternoons.
Over the past month or so I have gained about 8 pounds. Without caffeine I have severe munchies and I am constantly snacking. I have just been wanting to consume everything in sight (NO I AM NOT pregnant). I have noticed that this feeling of wanting to eat non-stop has slowed down some. I have been working on making better snack choices and mentally fighting the urge to want to eat constantly even when I am not hungry. This is really, really hard for me. Oh and I am slowly getting into a workout routine. Slowly!
Since stopping my caffeine intake I have noticed a HUGE decrease in my anxiety! I am no longer taking my anxiety medicine (I stopped that before eliminating caffeine) and I don’t feel like I need it anymore. To me the 8 extra pounds has been totally worth it to not have to struggle with anxiety on a daily basis.
For so many years coffee has been a part of my morning routine. To stay in my routine I drink decaf coffee. I love the taste of coffee and the smell of it brewing! Every now and then I will treat myself to a small caffeinated coffee or a soda. Sometimes I regret it and other times it doesn’t effect me.
I love the way I feel without anxiety. When I stopped drinking caffeine it changed my life. Yes, gaining the extra pounds wasn't fun, but it was so worth it and it has encouraged me to make healthier habits. I guess you can say I am on my way to finding a better ME.
